Government Approves Major Infrastructure Projects in Bihar
Significant Infrastructure Developments in Bihar
The central government has made a pivotal decision regarding infrastructure in Bihar. The Union Cabinet has granted approval for the upgrade of an 82.6-kilometer stretch of NH-22 to a four-lane highway. The estimated cost for this project is approximately ₹3,590.73 crores. Additionally, the Cabinet has also greenlit four railway multi-tracking projects worth around ₹9,450 crores.
Enhanced Connectivity with NH-22 Widening
Under the approved highway project, the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section will be developed to meet four-lane standards. This stretch, measuring about 82.6 kilometers, is expected to significantly improve transportation within northern Bihar and strengthen connectivity towards the Nepal border. The enhanced road network is anticipated to benefit both passenger travel and freight transport.
Boosting the Railway Network
The Cabinet has also approved four railway multi-tracking projects, with a total expenditure of around ₹9,450 crores. These initiatives aim to increase the capacity of the railway network, alleviate congestion, and facilitate smoother passenger and freight transport.
The projects include strengthening several key sections of the Howrah-Chennai main rail line with additional tracks, such as the fourth line from Kharagpur to Bhadrak, the fourth line from Bhadrak to Haridaspur, and the third and fourth lines from Gummidipundi to Gudur, as well as the third and fourth lines from Cuttack to Paradip.
Focus on Increasing Freight Capacity
These railway projects are expected to enhance freight capacity significantly. Reports suggest that these initiatives could add approximately 13 million tons of additional freight capacity, thereby accelerating the movement of goods between major industrial and commercial areas.
Total Investment Exceeding ₹13,000 Crores
The total estimated cost for these five major infrastructure projects approved by the Cabinet is around ₹13,041 crores. This includes the highway project in Bihar at approximately ₹3,591 crores and the four railway projects at about ₹9,450 crores.
Overall, the four-lane expansion of NH-22 is seen as a crucial step towards strengthening road connectivity in Bihar, while the railway multi-tracking projects will aid in enhancing the capacity of the country's major rail corridors. The government's focus is on improving infrastructure in both road and rail sectors to enhance passenger convenience, freight transport, and regional connectivity.
