New Delhi:
R Sudha, a Lok Sabha MP representing Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu, recently fell victim to a chain snatching incident in Delhi. The theft occurred during her morning walk near the Poland Embassy in Chanakyapuri, an area typically regarded as secure due to its proximity to foreign missions.
The event transpired around 6:15 AM on Monday, August 4, 2025, while Sudha was walking with fellow Rajya Sabha member Rajathi. A man on a Scooty, wearing a helmet, approached them and unexpectedly snatched the gold chain from Sudha's neck before fleeing the scene.
MP's Account of the Incident
In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sudha described the assailant as initially appearing harmless. “He was not speeding, so I didn’t suspect anything. However, when he yanked my chain, it caused a sharp pain and left marks on my neck. I struggled to keep my balance,” she recounted. The two MPs quickly alerted nearby police officers, but were advised to file a formal complaint at the nearest police station.
Concerns Over Security in a VIP Area
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of individuals in Chanakyapuri, which is home to numerous embassies and is regularly patrolled. Sudha expressed her distress, questioning the safety of women in Delhi. “If a Member of Parliament can be targeted in such a supposedly secure area, what can ordinary women expect in this city or country?” she remarked.
A formal complaint has been lodged, and the Delhi Police have initiated a CCTV investigation. Authorities are reviewing footage from nearby cameras to identify the suspect and the vehicle involved. The MP has urged the Home Ministry and local law enforcement to prioritize this case and ensure the perpetrator is apprehended swiftly to convey a strong message against such crimes.
