Gokulam Kerala Secures First Win of the Season

In a decisive match at Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Friday, Gokulam Kerala FC achieved a 2-0 victory against Dempo SC, marking their inaugural win in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26. The goals came from Moses Lalrinzuala in the first half and a late penalty by Mirjalol Kasimov.

This win propelled Gokulam Kerala to fifth place in the league standings, accumulating five points from four matches, while Dempo SC languishes at the bottom with just two points from the same number of games. Shibinraj Kunniyil earned the Player of the Match accolade.

Strategic Changes by Both Teams

Gokulam Kerala's head coach, Dimitris Dimitriou, implemented four changes to the starting lineup, introducing Nidhin Krishna in central defense for Harpreet Singh, Mirjalol Kasimov for N. Shigil, and forwards Rahul Raju and Moses Lalrinzuala in place of Nili Pedromo and John Kennedy.

Similarly, Dempo's coach, Samir Naik, made four adjustments, bringing in Jose Luis Moreno for Mohamed Ali in defense, midfielders Amay Morajkar and Knerkitalang Buam for Ariston Costa and Seigoumang Doungel, and Arnold Oliveira replacing Richmond Owusu on the wing.

First Half Highlights

The match, primarily a midfield contest, saw Gokulam Kerala take the lead just before the 20-minute mark. Moses Lalrinzuala skillfully maneuvered past two defenders and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that found the net, leaving goalkeeper Ashish Sibi with no chance.

Gokulam continued to dominate, creating several opportunities. Ashish Sibi made a remarkable save to deny Trijoy Das, and shortly after, Thabiso Brown's header hit the crossbar. On the other hand, Dempo struggled to break through Gokulam's solid defense, with their best chance coming from Marcus Joseph, whose shot was saved by Shibinraj Kunniyil.

Second Half Developments

Early in the second half, Gokulam was awarded a penalty when Thabiso Brown was fouled in the box. However, Ashish Sibi redeemed himself by saving Brown's penalty attempt, keeping the score at 1-0.

Despite Gokulam's continued pressure, Dempo's Laximan Rane provided some spark on the left wing, but the visitors failed to convert their chances. Ashish Sibi's goalkeeping remained crucial as he denied another attempt from Brown.

The match was sealed for Gokulam seven minutes before the end when Kasimov converted a penalty after being fouled by Aubin Kouakou. His powerful shot found the top-right corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

Dempo's Late Push

In the seven minutes of added time, Dempo made a strong effort to get back into the game, creating several chances. Aubin Kouakou, now playing as a makeshift striker, missed a volley, and Shibinraj made a spectacular save against Laxmikant Rane's close-range shot.

Ultimately, Gokulam Kerala's two-goal lead was sufficient to secure all three points and their first victory of the season.
