Goa Health Minister Apologizes to GMC Doctor Following Public Confrontation
Minister's Apology After Controversial Visit
On Monday, Vishawajit Rane, the health minister of Goa, expressed regret to Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, the Chief Medical Officer of Goa Medical College (GMC), after publicly reprimanding him during an unexpected visit to the institution.
In a social media post, Rane acknowledged that his approach was inappropriate and noted that the situation is being politicized, with opposition parties calling for his resignation.
Rane further elaborated on X, stating, “During my interview with Prudent Media last night, I sincerely apologized to Dr. Kuttikar for my harsh remarks during the GMC visit. My emotions got the better of me, and I regret how I handled the situation. I never intended to disrespect any medical professional.”
He emphasized the vital role doctors play in society, acknowledging their dedication to healing and saving lives. Rane expressed his utmost respect for their contributions and clarified that his intention was to ensure timely patient care and a responsive public health system.
Despite his apology, Rane voiced concerns about service disruptions at GMC, which are affecting numerous patients. He urged doctors to consider their broader responsibilities towards public welfare.
Rane lamented that the issue has been politicized, transforming a professional matter into a political dispute. He called for a focus on the integrity of GMC and its service to the community, urging all involved to prioritize healing over political agendas.
He appealed to the medical staff to return to their duties with the commitment that defines their profession, stating that any disservice to the people of Goa is unacceptable.
“Let us rise above this moment and reaffirm our commitment to public health, ensuring that no patient suffers due to misunderstandings,” Rane concluded, expressing pride in the medical community's role in Goa.
A video capturing the minister's confrontation with Dr. Kuttikar gained traction on social media, where Rane had suggested suspending the doctor for what he termed 'arrogant' behavior.
In response, GMC doctors protested in solidarity with their Chief Medical Officer, and both the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) threatened to strike.
Goa's Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, intervened, discussing the matter with Rane and ultimately reversing the suspension of Dr. Kuttikar.
In a post on X, Sawant assured the public, “I have reviewed the situation at Goa Medical College and spoken with the Health Minister. I want to confirm that Dr. Kuttikar will not face suspension. Our government and dedicated medical team are committed to maintaining high healthcare standards for all citizens, and we appreciate the invaluable service of our doctors.”
