Glenn Maxwell Bids Farewell to International Cricket

On November 2, veteran Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell officially announced his retirement from international cricket. He had not participated in any international matches since the T20 World Cup earlier this year, leaving behind a remarkable legacy across all formats.

Maxwell's Impressive Career Stats

Throughout his 14-year international career, Maxwell played in 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is, and 7 Tests, accumulating a total of 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. He was a key player in Australia's ODI World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2023, and he significantly contributed to their T20 World Cup victory in 2021.

Transition to T20 Leagues

In addition to his international retirement, Maxwell has also stepped away from domestic red-ball and 50-over cricket for Victoria. This decision allows him to focus on maintaining his physical fitness and participating in T20 franchise leagues globally, including the Big Bash League (BBL).

Maxwell's Iconic 201 Against Afghanistan

As he departs from international cricket, one of Maxwell's most memorable performances remains his unbeaten 201-run innings against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. This innings is celebrated as one of the greatest in white-ball cricket history.

At a critical moment when Australia was struggling at 91/7, Maxwell's remarkable innings not only showcased his talent but also his resilience, as he battled through severe cramps and dehydration, relying on his power-hitting skills to achieve the impossible.

A Historic Achievement

Maxwell's innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes, making him the first Australian to score a double century in Men's ODI cricket, following Belinda Clark's historic 229* in the 1997 Women's World Cup. In a remarkable chase of 292 runs, he contributed an astounding 69% of his team's total runs, forming an unbroken 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins.

Fans Remember Maxwell's Legacy

Maxwell's double century continues to resonate with fans and cricket enthusiasts, many of whom took to social media to reminisce about his record-breaking performance during his retirement announcement. His unpredictable batting style and match-winning abilities were highlighted, with fans expressing their gratitude for the unforgettable memories he created.

Numerous fans shared their favorite moments from his career, particularly his iconic innings against Afghanistan, which many consider one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.

Looking Ahead

Despite retiring from international cricket, Glenn Maxwell is set to return to the field for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League season, which kicks off on December 12, 2026, with a match against the Perth Scorchers at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
