GHMC Orders Closure of Slaughterhouses for Independence Day and Janmashtami

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and retail beef shops on August 15 and 16 for Independence Day and Janmashtami. This decision has sparked legal challenges, with claims that the GHMC Act does not allow such a blanket shutdown without specific reasons. Political leaders, including MP Asaduddin Owaisi, have criticized the order as unconstitutional, arguing it infringes on individual rights and freedoms. As the GHMC enforces this directive, the implications of the order are being closely examined in both legal and political arenas, raising questions about its validity and social impact.

Legal and Political Controversy

A petition filed in the Telangana High Court argues that Section 533(B) of the GHMC Act does not grant the commissioner the explicit authority to impose a complete business shutdown without specific reasons. The court has instructed the GHMC to clarify the legal basis for its order, referencing potential violations of Articles 14 and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, which pertain to the rights to trade and livelihood. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for August 13 (Wednesday).
