Germany's DFB Engages Jurgen Klopp for National Team Coaching Role
Preliminary Discussions in New York
The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that it has initiated preliminary discussions with Jurgen Klopp in New York, expressing optimism about finalizing an agreement for him to take over as the head coach of the national team. DFB representatives are currently in New York to engage with Klopp, who is the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull.
Earlier this month, the DFB identified Klopp as its top choice to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's unexpected exit in the Round of 32 against Paraguay during the FIFA World Cup. According to a statement, 'DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke had a comprehensive discussion with Jurgen Klopp in New York yesterday regarding the possibility of him becoming the national team head coach. During this productive dialogue, key terms for a potential contract were discussed.'
The negotiations are set to continue next week, with both parties expressing confidence that they can reach a successful conclusion, pending an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull. Any contract would need to receive final approval from a joint meeting of the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders' Meeting of DFB GmbH & Co. KG.
Context of the Coaching Transition
This marks Klopp's first coaching opportunity since departing from Liverpool in 2024. Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's surprising exit from the World Cup against Paraguay.
Nagelsmann had taken over the national team in September 2023 and led Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they were defeated by the eventual champions, Spain.
