Geeta Phogat's Presence at Sarguja Olympics

Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat attended the opening ceremony of the Sarguja Olympics 2026 in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, on Saturday, expressing pride in hosting such sporting events in the Sarguja region.


Phogat Advocates for Grassroots Sports

During her interaction with the media at the event, Phogat emphasized the significance of grassroots competitions in motivating young athletes. She stated, "It is truly commendable that events like these are being held in Surguja, Chhattisgarh. Such competitions ignite passion in children. I recall my school days when we looked up to guests and dreamed of being in their shoes. The Chhattisgarh government is actively promoting sports now."


Chief Minister Sai's Remarks

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the three-day Sarguja Olympics, highlighting Phogat's presence as a source of inspiration for the young participants. He remarked, "The Sarguja Olympics will take place over the next three days, and I wish all athletes the best. I also extend my gratitude to Geeta Phogat for uplifting the spirits of the competitors."


Encouragement for Young Athletes

Phogat expressed her appreciation to the Chhattisgarh government for the invitation and encouraged the daughters of Chhattisgarh and all athletes to strive for excellence and bring honor to the nation. She quoted a famous line from the film Dangal, which is inspired by her life, asking, "Are our girls any less than the boys?" Additionally, she provided various tips to young women in Sarguja, focusing on self-confidence and determination to help them succeed in sports.


Khelo India Tribal Games on the Horizon

Sarguja is one of three cities in Chhattisgarh set to host the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) from March 26 to April 6. The other two cities are Raipur and Jagdalpur. The Games will feature seven medal sports, including athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling, along with two demonstration sports: Mallakhamb and Kabaddi. KITG will showcase talent from various states and Union Territories across India.
