Gautam Gambhir Takes Legal Action Against Digital Impersonation and AI Misuse
Gautam Gambhir's Legal Battle
Gautam Gambhir, a two-time ICC white-ball World Cup champion, Arjuna Awardee, Padma Shri recipient, former Member of Parliament, and current Head Coach of the Indian Men's National Cricket Team, has filed a civil lawsuit in the Delhi High Court (C.S. (COMM.) of 2026). This action aims to safeguard his personality and publicity rights against a troubling trend of digital impersonation, AI-generated deepfakes, and unauthorized commercial use.
Surge in Fake Digital Content
Since late 2025, Gambhir's legal representatives have noted a significant rise in fake digital content across platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Facebook. Reports indicate that various accounts have utilized artificial intelligence, face-swapping, and voice-cloning technologies to produce realistic videos that falsely portray Gambhir making statements he never uttered. One such misleading video, which falsely suggested a resignation, attracted over 2.9 million views, while another clip misrepresented his comments on senior cricketers' World Cup participation, garnering over 1.7 million views.
Additionally, major e-commerce sites have been found selling merchandise and posters featuring his name and likeness without authorization.
Legal Proceedings Against Multiple Defendants
The lawsuit targets 16 defendants, including specific social media accounts (such as JanKey Frames, Bhupendra Paintola, and others), e-commerce giants (Amazon, Flipkart), and platform intermediaries (Meta Platforms Inc., X Corp., Google LLC / YouTube). The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and the Department of Telecommunications are included as proforma parties to assist in enforcing any court orders.
The legal action references the Copyright Act of 1957, the Trade Marks Act of 1999, and the Commercial Courts Act of 2015, drawing on established Delhi High Court precedents that affirm personality rights as enforceable, particularly in the context of AI exploitation.
Claims for Damages and Injunctions
Gambhir is seeking damages amounting to ₹2.5 crore, along with requests for account renditions, a permanent injunction, and the removal of all infringing content.
The lawsuit demands a permanent injunction to prevent all defendants from using, reproducing, or exploiting Gambhir's name, image, voice, or persona—especially through AI, deepfake technology, morphing, and face-swapping—without his explicit written consent.
An urgent application for an ex-parte ad-interim injunction has also been submitted, requesting the immediate removal of all infringing content and a halt on further distribution until the final hearing.
Gautam Gambhir's Statement
"My identity—my name, my face, my voice—has been weaponized by anonymous accounts to spread misinformation and profit at my expense. This issue transcends personal grievances; it concerns legal rights, dignity, and the protection that every public figure deserves in this era of artificial intelligence," Gambhir stated.
