Gambhir Addresses Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Non-Selection

New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir, the Indian cricket coach, has provided clarity regarding the absence of young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi from the playing XI in the T20 series against Afghanistan. Gambhir indicated that the 15-year-old sensation will need to wait a bit longer for his opportunity to represent Team India.

Vaibhav entered the Afghanistan series in exceptional form, having been named 'Player of the Series' during the Zimbabwe tour, where he amassed 151 runs at an impressive strike rate of 196.10. However, with the return of Sanju Samson to the squad, Vaibhav found himself on the bench, a decision that left many fans disappointed. He did not get a chance to play even in the final match of the series on September 17.

Why Sanju Samson Over Vaibhav?

During the post-match press conference, Gambhir emphasized Sanju's consistent and strong performances for India in recent matches. He admitted that the decision to drop Sanju for Vaibhav in the previous England series was one of the toughest choices he has faced as a coach.

"Sanju has proven his capabilities. A World Cup-winning performance is not a fluke. Choosing to drop Sanju for the England series was perhaps the hardest decision of my coaching career. However, prioritizing a player's form is essential. I aimed to revert to the same team combination that secured the T20 World Cup. A player doesn't lose their skill after a few poor matches. The members of a World Cup-winning team don't suddenly become ineffective after one series," Gambhir stated after the match.

Sanju Samson lived up to Gambhir's confidence by delivering an outstanding performance against Afghanistan, scoring 117 runs, which included two half-centuries.

Vaibhav's Time Will Come

Gambhir reassured that while Vaibhav Suryavanshi's talent is unquestionable, Sanju remains the priority. He also mentioned that when Vaibhav does get his chance, he will be given ample opportunities to prove himself.

"We maintain open communication with Vaibhav; he must wait for his opportunity. We recognize his talent. However, a player who has consistently performed over the years will always take precedence over a newcomer. When Vaibhav gets his chance, we will ensure he has a long run. This is the nature of Indian cricket. We desire that level of competition and talent within the team. Regardless of age, whether 15 or 30, sometimes waiting for your chance is necessary," Gambhir added.

Cricket enthusiasts are now eager to see Vaibhav Suryavanshi in action during the upcoming Japan T20 series or the Asian Games.
