Gambhir's Vision for Team Stability

Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: As the Indian cricket team prepares for the fifth T20I against New Zealand, head coach Gautam Gambhir highlighted the importance of making sound decisions rather than popular ones. He believes that players who have consistently performed deserve extended opportunities. India has already secured the T20I series with a score of 3-1 ahead of the concluding match at Seddon Park.

The selection of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has sparked discussions throughout the series. With T20 World Cup-winning openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma often taking precedence, Sooryavanshi has primarily played when there are injuries or performance issues. In this series, he has participated in two matches, scoring four runs while batting at number three and a brisk 45 runs while opening. Since debuting at just 15 years old against England in July, Sooryavanshi has played 10 T20Is, accumulating 295 runs at an average of 29.50 and a strike rate exceeding 185, including two half-centuries. The conversation around his inclusion continues, especially when either Abhishek or Samson struggles.

Gambhir also shared insights on team management, stating, "My role is not to please everyone but to make the right choices. In today's world, influenced by social media, it's tempting to opt for popular decisions. However, I prioritize making the right calls to ensure a secure environment within the team." He emphasized that players who have shown consistent performance over time deserve more chances, which is the approach taken during this series.
