Gaurav Gogoi Appointed President of India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group

Guwahati, Feb 25: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) announced on Tuesday that the recent appointment of Gaurav Gogoi, a senior Congress leader and MP from Jorhat, as the president of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group, has revealed what they describe as politically motivated attacks from the ruling BJP.

Gogoi, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, received his nomination from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The APCC emphasized that this appointment sends a powerful message, especially in light of serious allegations made by the Assam Chief Minister against Gogoi.

In their statement, the APCC remarked, “Gaurav Gogoi ji has been appointed as the President of the ‘India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group’ by the Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha. This comes at a time when the Assam Chief Minister is waging a malicious campaign against our leader, even labeling him a ‘Pakistani agent’. These national developments have clearly exposed the unfounded nature of such accusations.”

The party accused the BJP of attempting to undermine Gogoi’s integrity and patriotism to distract the public and gain political advantage. They asserted that this appointment reflects Gogoi's credibility and acceptance on both national and international stages.

Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, congratulated Gogoi and criticized the ruling party's tactics. He stated that the Chief Minister's comments were part of a “desperate attempt” to damage the reputation of a senior opposition figure.

“To question the patriotism of an elected MP for political gain, to mislead public opinion with baseless claims, and to engage in propaganda-driven politics is detrimental to democracy. Those in power should be expected to provide responsible and fact-based statements, not engage in slander,” Saikia remarked. “By appointing Gaurav Gogoi as president of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Lok Sabha Speaker has conveyed a clear message of trust in him at both national and international levels,” he added.

The APCC concluded that this development reinforces the Congress party's position that the allegations against Gogoi are unfounded and politically motivated, urging the ruling BJP to avoid what they termed as divisive and misleading narratives.
