Gaurav Gogoi Highlights Internal Congress Dynamics Ahead of Assam Elections
Congress Faces Internal Challenges in Upcoming Elections
Jorhat, Mar 21: As the Assembly elections approach in just 18 days, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), emphasized that the forthcoming election is not solely a rivalry between the BJP and Congress, but rather a contest within Congress itself.
While campaigning in Majuli to support Dr. Indranil Pegu, the Congress candidate, Gogoi made pointed criticisms of the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He remarked, "At first glance, this may seem like a battle against the BJP, but in truth, it is Congress under Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership, merely donning the BJP's identity. The previous Congress government, led by the late Tarun Gogoi, had certain missteps that alienated voters from the party."
Gogoi noted that former Congress members are now congregating at Vajpayee Bhawan, seeking ministerial roles, MLA nominations, or other positions.
"We are the Congress that upholds Tarun Gogoi's principles. This faction signifies renewal, showcasing new faces and vibrant energy," he stated.
He stressed that the election ultimately presents a choice for the electorate.
"It is a contest between Congress led by Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress inspired by Tarun Gogoi's ideals. The decision lies with the people," he added.
On the topic of defections from Congress to the BJP, Gogoi asserted that these transitions have inadvertently fortified Congress.
"This is a familiar strategy of Himanta Biswa Sarma. During the Lok Sabha elections, several of my close allies joined the BJP. However, I noticed that our popularity among the public actually grew," he explained.
He also criticized the Chief Minister directly, stating that since taking office in Assam, fear, intimidation, misinformation, and deceit have become the BJP's primary tactics.
"This is indicative of their weakness—they have not succeeded in earning the public's trust through their actions," he remarked.
The APCC chief underscored that Congress is prioritizing youth engagement in this election and expressed optimism about Pegu's chances in Majuli.
Regarding the decision to deny a ticket to Titabor MLA Bhaskar Baruah, Gogoi characterized it as a tactical choice by the party. He believes that this time, Congress's momentum will surge from Upper Assam and North Assam.
