Gaurav Gogoi Responds to Threats from Assam's Chief Minister

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has stated that he is unfazed by the threats issued by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking to reporters in Jorhat on Thursday, Gogoi, who is also the president of the Assam Congress unit, remarked, "I am not affected by the Chief Minister's threats and intimidation tactics. Let him continue; the people of the state are no longer swayed by his words."

Political Tensions and Allegations

Gogoi expressed that the Chief Minister's politics of intimidation would not last long. He added, "Sarma can do whatever he wants for the next four months, but after losing power, he will have to face the public."

Ongoing Investigations and Allegations

In recent months, Sarma has repeatedly accused Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, of having ties with the Pakistani intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Colburn is a British citizen. The state government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe this matter, which submitted its report to the Chief Minister on September 10. Sarma mentioned last week that the case would be handed over to a central investigative agency.

Further Developments in the Case

Sarma also indicated that since the SIT had filed a charge sheet related to the death of Jubin Garg, "we will now proceed with the case against Gaurav Gogoi." Referring to the charge sheet filed by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in the Garg murder case, Gogoi pointed out that comments from experienced lawyers in the state suggest that the charge sheet is "extremely weak."

Allegations of Political Manipulation

He accused, "This charge sheet appears to have been deliberately crafted to protect the Chief Minister's close associate, Shyamkanu Mahanta. Several key accused individuals have been omitted, who should have been included."
