Gaurav Gogoi's Criticism of BJP Leadership
On March 25, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Congress, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for disrespecting the position of Chief Minister and accused them of controlling state governments from a distance in Delhi. Gogoi recalled that five years ago, Sarbananda Sonowal, a tribal leader associated with the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), was appointed as Chief Minister after leading the BJP to victory.
Gogoi pointed out that Sonowal, who was the Chief Minister five years ago, was removed after winning the elections and forming the government. He further mentioned that in Rajasthan, the Chief Minister was appointed merely because his name was on a slip. He accused the BJP of treating leadership roles as a game of musical chairs and stated that the party does not give proper respect to the Chief Minister's position.
When asked about his role in the upcoming elections, Gogoi emphasized that the primary goal is to establish a Congress-led government and alleviate the fear prevalent among the people of Assam. He expressed that he has no personal ambitions; the position was his before and remains so today. Highlighting the public's enthusiasm for change, he noted that people are excited as they see a historic opportunity to oust the decade-long BJP government. He stated that the current government thrives on politics of fear, and this is a chance for liberation, with the Congress standing alongside the people. This enthusiasm reflects a vision for a new Assam.
The Indian National Congress has announced 101 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. The contest will be between the current BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress for the 126-seat assembly.
