Guwahati, June 2: The Gauhati High Court is scheduled to consider the bail application of Siddhartha Sarma, a key suspect in the controversial death case of Assam's renowned cultural figure Zubeen Garg, on June 4.
As per sources from the court, this case will be presented before Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia. Sarma, who was previously employed as Garg's manager, sought the High Court's intervention after a fast-track court denied his bail request.
The lower court's decision to refuse bail was based on the gravity of the charges and the ongoing investigation surrounding the case.
Sarma is one of the main accused in this high-profile incident, which has garnered significant public interest throughout Assam.
This development follows the Gauhati High Court's recent dismissal of the bail plea from Shyamkanu Mahanta, another major suspect in the case and organizer of the North East India Festival (NEIF). Mahanta's bail request was also turned down by a fast-track court.
After the High Court's decision regarding Mahanta, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Ziaul Kamar remarked that while individuals have the right to appeal court decisions to the Supreme Court, the focus will now shift towards the trial phase.
"The next hearing is set for June 8, when witnesses are anticipated to be summoned for examination. This is merely one phase of the proceedings. The trial itself will be crucial, as the court will assess witness testimonies and the evidence presented before reaching a conclusion," Kamar stated on May 29.
In a related development, a fast-track court also denied bail to Shekharjyoti Goswami on May 29. He faces accusations of improperly utilizing musical equipment and other resources associated with Garg's studio for personal benefit.
This case has sparked significant public outrage and renewed calls for accountability, with family members and supporters of Garg advocating for justice and viewing recent court rulings as vital steps towards a thorough investigation and trial.
The upcoming hearing on Sarma's bail plea is anticipated to attract considerable attention as the legal proceedings progress.
