Ongoing Legal Proceedings in Zubeen Garg Case

Guwahati, Dec 17: On Wednesday, the Gauhati High Court resumed its examination of a public interest litigation (PIL) that calls for an independent investigation into the death of Zubeen Garg, a prominent cultural figure from Assam.

The petitioners have reiterated their request for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, despite the Special Investigation Team (SIT) having submitted a comprehensive chargesheet.

This PIL, initiated by Abhijit Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, raises concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation and seeks judicial oversight to ensure all facets of the case are meticulously reviewed.

During the court session, Advocate AM Choudhury, representing the petitioners, informed the judges about the extensive and intricate nature of the chargesheet presented by the SIT.

After the hearing, petitioner Sharma expressed to the media that the chargesheet is “lengthy and substantial,” necessitating detailed examination.

“Given its size, it requires careful reading. The committee tasked with reviewing it will provide a comprehensive report following their analysis of the document,” he stated.

Sharma mentioned that the next court session is set for March 13, by which time the committee's findings are anticipated to be submitted to the High Court.

Reaffirming the petitioners' position, he emphasized that the call for a CBI investigation remains firm. “Even with the chargesheet filed, we will closely monitor whether the accused receive bail or if anyone evades responsibility through the SIT's findings,” Sharma added.

The High Court had previously conducted the initial hearing of PIL (No. 46/2025) on November 15, where the petitioners demanded a transparent and thorough inquiry into Garg’s death.

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, raising significant public concern regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

The proceedings of the PIL are occurring alongside the trial in the lower court. On December 16, seven individuals accused in the case appeared virtually before the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court due to security issues.

The CJM court appointed a legal aid attorney for the accused after the Bar Association opted not to represent them. Copies of the extensive chargesheet were also distributed to aid in the ongoing trial.

Advocate Dhrubajyoti Das was designated by the District Legal Services Authority to defend the accused, with the next trial court hearing scheduled for December 22.
