Ganga Expressway Opens Toll-Free for Initial Days Post-Inauguration
Ganga Expressway Overview
The Ganga Expressway, stretching 594 kilometers, is currently allowing drivers to travel without toll fees. Following its recent inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the expressway has been opened for traffic, although toll collection has yet to commence. According to sources, toll charges are expected to begin approximately 10 to 15 days after receiving cabinet approval for the proposed rates. The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority has already established toll rates for the financial year 2026-27, which are based on a per-kilometer charge. For the entire distance from Meerut to Prayagraj, car drivers may incur costs of around ₹1,515.

- Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and registered tractors: ₹1.28
- Cars, jeeps, vans, and light motor vehicles: ₹2.55
- Light commercial and light goods vehicles / mini buses: ₹4.05
- Buses and trucks: ₹8.20
- Heavy construction machinery, earthmoving vehicles: ₹12.60
- Heavy vehicles with 7 or more axles: ₹16.10
Speed Limit and Toll System
The expressway has set a maximum speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. The toll system will operate on a closed toll basis, meaning charges will be applied based on the distance traveled. Designed with advanced technology and robust infrastructure, the Ganga Expressway is built to withstand extreme heat, heavy rainfall, and the pressure of millions of tons of traffic.
The main carriageway features a weather-resistant asphalt layer with a thickness of up to 100 millimeters, utilizing a total of 367,022 metric tons of asphalt. To ensure road durability, a high California Bearing Ratio (CBR) standard has been adopted, providing a stable foundation. The construction involved 19 crore cubic meters of soil, 278,380 metric tons of steel, 1.483 million metric tons of cement, and 4.188 million cubic meters of sand, resulting in a total carriageway thickness of approximately 485 to 500 millimeters.
Innovative Technology Implementation
The expressway's design capacity ranges from 79 to 108 million standard axles, enabling it to support heavy freight vehicles without damage. A total of 25.4 million man-days of labor and millions of tons of high-quality materials have contributed to its strength.
Utilizing design crust technology will also reduce future maintenance costs. To enhance safety during travel, artificial intelligence and advanced stress sensor technology are being employed to monitor road conditions in real-time.
The journey from Meerut to Prayagraj, which previously took 10 to 12 hours, can now be completed in just 6 hours. This expressway will not only save time but also boost trade, industry, and connectivity between Eastern and Western Uttar Pradesh.
