Gaikwad Reflects on Dhoni's Absence and CSK's Young Talent After IPL 2026
Gaikwad Discusses Dhoni's Uncertain Future
In the aftermath of Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) final group stage match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed concerns regarding the legendary MS Dhoni's future with the team. He mentioned that even he is unaware of Dhoni's plans for the next season. Gaikwad acknowledged that Dhoni's absence has significantly impacted the team, particularly during critical moments in the death overs, where his presence could shift the game's momentum and instill fear in opponents. He noted that CSK felt the void left by Dhoni's game-changing abilities this season. Despite uncertainties about the future, Gaikwad commended the team's efforts and the valuable experience gained by younger players throughout the tournament.
CSK's Struggles and Future Prospects
Dhoni was sidelined for the entire IPL 2026 season due to a calf injury. Following their title win in 2023, CSK has faced challenges, failing to qualify for the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, having been eliminated in the group stage each time. The team concluded their IPL 2026 campaign with a disappointing 89-run defeat to GT in Ahmedabad.
Gaikwad remarked, "Will we see MS Dhoni next season? You will find out next year, just as I will. His absence has been a significant loss for us. He has the ability to intimidate the opposition, especially in the late overs, and can change the game's dynamics just by being at the crease. We certainly missed him this season. While the future remains uncertain, I am proud of the squad we had and the experience they gained this year."
Emergence of Young Talent in CSK
Gaikwad also emphasized the rise of young talent within CSK as the team prepares for a rebuild. He noted that the transition from seasoned players like Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu has created opportunities for newcomers such as Kartik Sharma, Urvil Patel, and Dewald Brevis. He praised Kartik Sharma for his impressive performances, recognizing his potential while also pointing out areas for growth. Gaikwad mentioned that Urvil Patel, who played a full season for the first time, may have felt the weight of expectations but will benefit from the experience gained. He expressed confidence that these young players will develop further and help CSK return stronger in the next season.
"Regarding the youngsters who can lead this team forward, moving on from experienced players like Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu has opened doors for talents like Kartik Sharma and Urvil Patel. Kartik has shown great promise, while Urvil, in his first full season, faced high expectations. However, gaining match experience will be invaluable for their growth, and I believe we will come back stronger next year," he concluded.
