Fugitive Gangster Himanshu Bhau Detained in the US: What’s Next for His Deportation?
Haryana Police Collaborates with CBI for Deportation
New Delhi: The Haryana Police is currently collaborating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to finalize the procedures for the extradition of fugitive gangster Himanshu Bhau, who has been apprehended by US authorities and is now in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officials reported on Saturday.
Bhau is wanted in India for several murder and extortion charges. His initial detention was due to providing false information, as Haryana Police indicated that he had escaped the country using a fraudulent surname on his passport.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana Police is actively working with the CBI, which serves as India's primary agency for Interpol, to hasten his return from the United States, according to officials.
Bhau's criminal activities reportedly began at the age of 17 when he allegedly attempted to murder a rival. After being arrested, he managed to escape from a juvenile correctional facility in Hisar in 2020. Since then, he has been linked to numerous organized crime incidents, becoming one of the most sought-after criminals.
Investigators claim that Bhau initially fled to Portugal using forged documents and has been running his criminal operations from abroad. His gang is said to have connections with rival factions of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The gang gained notoriety in September when it took responsibility on social media for the brazen murder of gym trainer Vijay Kumar in South Delhi's Aya Nagar area. Kumar was shot dead on September 14 after being lured outside, where two assailants on motorcycles opened fire.
Authorities noted that Kumar was the third victim in an ongoing local family feud.
Additionally, the gang was implicated in a notorious shootout at a Burger King in Rajouri Garden in 2024, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old man. Bhau claimed responsibility for this incident on social media, asserting that the victim was involved in the 2020 murder of one of his associates.
