FSSAI's Major Operation Against Fake Ghee

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has successfully dismantled an interstate network involved in the production and sale of counterfeit ghee. During a coordinated operation in Delhi and Haryana, officials seized over 6,500 liters of adulterated ghee along with related raw materials. This operation was conducted under the supervision of Devesh Kumar Mahla, Director of FSSAI's Northern Regional Office, in collaboration with local police and Central Food Safety Officers (CFSOs).

Details of the Operation

Mahla reported that approximately 6,500 liters of adulterated ghee were confiscated. Laboratory tests revealed that the ghee was made from vegetable oils and animal fats. The operation was deemed successful, employing tactics such as decoy customers, planned surveillance, and prompt action. According to FSSAI, the investigation commenced after officials noticed advertisements for premium cow ghee and regular ghee that lacked essential FSSAI licensing information and proper labeling. Subsequently, they initiated a decoy operation to collect product samples.

Findings and Further Actions

The collected samples were sent to an FSSAI-accredited and NABL-certified laboratory for thorough analysis. The results indicated that the samples did not meet the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, revealing a mixture of vegetable oils and other non-dairy substances. Based on these findings, FSSAI teams traced the alleged manufacturing, storage, and distribution networks, leading to actions taken on June 17 across various locations in Delhi and Haryana.

Seizures in Delhi and Haryana

In Delhi, officials raided a location associated with Parit Ram in the Dhulsiras village of Dwarka, discovering approximately 1,020 liters of unidentified oil suspected to be used as raw material for fake ghee, along with around 1,500 liters of suspected adulterated ghee. This stock was confiscated and placed under regulatory custody. In Haryana, authorities targeted 'Bala Ji Food Products' in Sonipat, seizing over 4,000 liters of suspected adulterated ghee prepared for market sale. FSSAI has filed formal complaints with local police, and FIRs have been registered against the offenders. The seized items are secured in regulatory custody, with necessary samples taken for further legal investigation.
