Imphal, Oct 10: Following a resurgence of violence in Chassad village, prohibitory measures have been enacted in Kamjong district, resulting in the death of a Kuki woman amidst ongoing reports of gunfire and arson.
The victim, identified as Domkhonei Touthang, was the wife of Lallenmang Touthang and a mother of five. She succumbed to gunshot wounds around 9:40 PM on Friday, October 9.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that gunfire and arson persisted throughout the night, with numerous homes reportedly set ablaze. The full extent of the destruction and the number of affected houses is still being assessed.
The events leading to the shooting and the identities of those involved remain uncertain.
In response to the unrest, the district administration has enforced prohibitory orders within a 400-metre radius of Chassad Police Gate Junction.
On October 9, District Magistrate L. N. Kashung invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which prohibits gatherings of five or more individuals, the carrying of weapons, and movement outside residences in the designated area.
These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice, although security personnel, on-duty magistrates, essential service workers, and individuals with special permits are exempt.
The District Magistrate has also instructed the Superintendent of Police to ensure adequate security presence in the restricted zone.
Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Women’s Forum, based in Delhi and NCR, has condemned the killing of Domkhonei and is calling for a thorough investigation and accountability. They are also seeking support for her grieving family, particularly her five children—three sons and two daughters.
The situation in Chassad continues to be tense, with further updates on the violence and damage still pending.
Earlier, on Thursday, a head constable from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) sustained injuries from a grenade attack at the B/107 RAF gate in New Lambulane, under the jurisdiction of Porompat Police Station in Imphal East district.
This incident occurred around 10 PM when unidentified individuals reportedly threw a grenade at the gate.
The injured officer, Dhananjay Rai, originally from Uttar Pradesh, suffered minor injuries and was first treated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) before being transferred to Sheja Hospital for additional care.
The motive behind the grenade attack and the identities of those responsible remain unknown, with no group claiming responsibility for the incident thus far.
