Kerala Sports Minister's Announcement

On Monday, O. J. Janeesh, the Sports Minister of Kerala, declared that residents can now enjoy FIFA World Cup football matches without any cost through non-commercial public screenings.

Government Steps In Amid Licensing Issues

Concerns emerged when Zee Entertainment secured the broadcast rights for the FIFA World Cup in India, and its streaming service, Zee5, partnered with Eagles FC Kerala for public streaming rights in the state. This raised fears that public screenings in Kerala would necessitate licenses.

In response, the state government promptly intervened and engaged in discussions with Eagles FC Kerala, leading to a resolution that allows free screening permissions for non-profit football screenings. This exemption is applicable to screenings organized by football fan groups, clubs, and residents' associations that do not charge an entry fee.

However, this exemption does not extend to commercial venues and shopping malls that aim to profit from public screenings. Previously, organizers were obligated to pay FIFA licensing fees ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹2.5 lakh.

The government clarified that it differentiates between commercial screenings by businesses and free screenings organized by football enthusiasts, clubs, and community groups. The state's stance is that football fans should enjoy the matches without financial strain.

Upon learning of the situation, the Sports Department took action and encouraged stakeholders to enable free football streaming for fans. Ongoing discussions with FIFA representatives, Zee officials, and Eagles FC Kerala culminated in a final decision made on Friday.

Registration Process for Free Screenings

Individuals or groups planning to host public screenings can register at EaglesFCKerala.com at no cost to obtain permission for screening the matches. The licensing will be automatically approved.

The minister expressed gratitude to the management of Eagles FC Kerala, Zee Channel officials, and FIFA representatives for their support of football fans in Kerala.
