Kolkata, June 1: The West Bengal government has officially launched a program offering complimentary bus rides for women, fulfilling a promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in their election manifesto. This initiative began on Monday and is now available statewide.
To utilize this free service, women must present one of the identity documents recognized by the state transport department, confirming their status as residents of West Bengal.
The acceptable forms of identification include Aadhaar cards, EPIC cards, Grameen Rozgar Guarantee Cards, Ayushman Bharat Health Cards, driving licenses, PAN cards, passports, pension documents with photographs, service IDs issued by government entities, and any other government-issued ID from West Bengal that includes a recent photo of the individual.
Women wishing to take advantage of the free rides need to show one of these identification documents to receive a 'zero-value' ticket from the bus conductors.
This service is applicable for both short and long-distance bus routes. Conductors have been trained by the state transport department to manage this system and issue the 'zero-value' tickets accordingly.
The current process of presenting identification documents will remain in effect for the time being. Eventually, women will be able to apply for a smart card featuring a QR code, which will include their name and photo. This card can be obtained through applications submitted to the BDO or SDO. Until the smart card is issued, the listed documents can be used to access the free ride service.
