Free Annual Health Check-ups for Workers Over 40 Introduced by Government
Significant Initiative for Workers
In a positive development for workers across the nation, the central government has launched a free annual health check-up program for all workers aged 40 and above. During an event held at the Employees' State Insurance Corporation Medical College and Hospital in Delhi, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of ensuring respect, welfare, and social security through the foundational labor codes.
Empowering 'Labor Power' and 'Youth Power'
According to reports, Mandaviya stated that under Modi's leadership over the past 12 years, the government has focused on creating jobs and strengthening both 'Labor Power' and 'Youth Power' through state initiatives. He noted that the coverage of social security has expanded significantly, reaching nearly 94 crore people from a population of about 30 crore over the last decade, increasing the coverage rate from 19% to 64%. The number of beneficiaries under the ESIC has also risen from approximately 7 crore a decade ago to around 15 crore today.
Preventing Serious Health Issues
In this new initiative, Mandaviya announced that free health check-ups will now be available annually for all workers over the age of 40 nationwide. He emphasized that these health screenings can help detect issues at an early stage, potentially preventing serious health problems. The minister also mentioned key labor reforms under the four labor codes, including proposals for equal pay for men and women, an increase in maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks, and provisions for home-based work for women.
Inclusion of Workers in Hazardous Jobs
Mandaviya explained that while countries worldwide are still exploring ways to include gig and platform workers in social security, the Modi government has ensured their inclusion through new labor codes. He further stated that workers engaged in hazardous jobs, as well as those working in establishments with fewer than 10 employees, will now be covered under the ESIC. He assured that the current government is committed to addressing the concerns of workers with dedication and sensitivity, ensuring their voices are heard.
