France Aims for Bronze in FIFA World Cup 2026 Third-Place Match
Deschamps Emphasizes Duty to Compete for Bronze
Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, expressed that his team is not enthusiastic about participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff against England, scheduled for Saturday in Miami. However, he emphasized the importance of striving for the bronze medal following their 2-0 loss to Spain in the semi-finals. During a pre-match press conference, Deschamps acknowledged that neither team was eager to play this match, yet he underscored that it is a competitive fixture, not a friendly, and they have a responsibility to aim for victory.
"I have a responsibility for this game. It is not a friendly match; it is a playoff for third place. The players, staff, and I must fulfill this final objective. Although it is less significant than the final, both England and we are not keen on playing, but we must proceed," Deschamps stated. He reiterated that the players must honor the national jersey by striving for third place, recognizing that this match will mark his final game as coach. He added, "We need to focus on achieving this goal. I am aware that this is my last match. I don’t want anyone to be upset. The end is approaching, but life continues."
Players Motivated to Honor Their Coach
Defender Ibrahima Konate shared that the players are not excited about the third-place playoff but are motivated to secure a victory for their departing coach, Deschamps. "None of us wanted to play for this third place, but we have no choice. We want to repay our coach for everything he has done for the France team," Konate remarked. He emphasized the need for gratitude towards Deschamps and the importance of doing everything possible to win the bronze medal, referring to it humorously as a 'chocolate medal.'
