Four Arrested in Tinsukia for Alleged Links to ULFA-I Extortion Activities

DOOMDOOMA, May 25: Authorities in Tinsukia have detained four individuals, one of whom is a central committee member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), due to their alleged involvement in extortion and suspected fundraising for the banned militant group ULFA-I.
The individuals taken into custody are identified as Devasish Gohain (27) from Dirak Powai, Dipu Chetia Patra (30) from Sarbaibandha Sarala Nagar, Samar Gohain (38), who serves as the assistant secretary of AASU and resides on Kokoratoli Jail Road, and Mrityunjoy Konwar (39) from Dighala Sonowal Gaon in Dibrugarh district.
During a press briefing on Sunday evening, Tinsukia Police revealed that two distinct cases have been filed regarding this matter, and investigations are ongoing.
According to law enforcement, Tinsukia PS Case No. 98/2026 has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Arms Act. Additionally, Tinsukia PS Case No. 110/2026 has been filed under relevant sections of the BNS and the UA(P) Act.
Preliminary investigations have indicated potential connections between the detained individuals and ULFA-I, prompting extensive interrogations at Tinsukia Sadar, Hijuguri, and Makum police stations.
The police also reported that the four suspects were presented in court, where investigators secured remand for three of them for further questioning.
In a related operation, Assam Police conducted a special mission in Maharashtra, resulting in the arrest of one individual named Sheikh Rashiv, who has since been brought back to Assam on transit remand.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the alleged extortion network and its militant affiliations.
