Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi Injured in Attack
Attack on Kamal Kharazi
Kamal Kharazi, the former Iranian foreign minister, has sustained serious injuries following an attack in Tehran that tragically resulted in the death of his wife. Reports from various Iranian news outlets, including Shargh, Etemad, and Ham Mihan, indicate that his residence was struck earlier today in what has been characterized as a coordinated US-Israel operation. Kharazi has since been admitted to a hospital due to his critical condition.
Having served as Iran's foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 under President Mohammad Khatami, Kharazi continues to play a significant role in shaping Iranian foreign policy as the head of the Foreign Policy Council. Recent reports from Mehr News Agency highlight his active participation in diplomatic discussions, particularly regarding potential engagements with Pakistan and a meeting involving US Vice President JD Vance.
Two Iranian officials mentioned in the reports speculated that the attack on Kharazi might have been aimed at undermining these diplomatic initiatives. Known for his expertise in policy and his moderate stance, Kharazi recently expressed skepticism about the viability of diplomacy in a CNN interview, criticizing the United States for perceived dishonesty during negotiations. He stated, “I don’t see any room for diplomacy anymore. Because Donald Trump had been deceiving others and not keeping with his promises, and we experienced this in two times of negotiations – that while we were engaged in negotiation, they struck us.”
