Guwahati, Sept 13: Siddique Ahmed, a former minister in Assam and a four-time Congress MLA, passed away on Sunday at the age of 63 after a long struggle with cancer.

His personal secretary, Sale Ahmed, confirmed that he died at his home in Baroigram, located in the Sribhumi district, around 8 am.

Ahmed is survived by his wife, Anima Begum, along with three sons and a daughter.

A significant political figure in the Barak Valley, Ahmed represented the Karimganj South Assembly constituency for four consecutive terms. He had been receiving treatment for cancer for an extended period.

During his tenure, Ahmed held various ministerial roles in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet, overseeing departments such as Border Protection and Development, Industries and Commerce, and Cooperation.

In the initial term of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Ahmed had shown his support for the government while remaining affiliated with the Congress party.

Despite being suspended from the Congress, this status remained until his passing.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed his condolences, highlighting Ahmed's commitment to public welfare.

“Although we were from different political backgrounds, our relationship transcended politics. We shared many challenging moments together,” Sarma remarked in a social media update.

Sarma, who worked alongside Ahmed in the Gogoi cabinet, praised him for his professionalism in managing his responsibilities.

“He was a remarkable individual who cherished relationships and showed kindness to all. I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear colleague, Shri Siddique Ahmed Sahab. May he rest in peace,” Sarma added.

In this challenging time, Sarma extended his thoughts to Anima Bhabi and the family, wishing them strength to cope with this profound loss.

Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora also shared his sorrow over Ahmed's demise, affirming that the party would continue to honor his memory and contributions.
