Flood Situation Worsens in Assam, Over 57,000 Affected

Severe Flooding in Assam

The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated significantly, resulting in one fatality and impacting over 57,000 individuals across seven districts. The state government has requested assistance from the army and air force to evacuate residents from the hardest-hit areas and to aid in rescue operations. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that four ministers have been dispatched to Upper Assam to oversee relief efforts in the most affected districts.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the recent death in Sivasagar brings the total number of flood-related fatalities in the state this year to five. ASDMA reported that more than 57,100 people have been affected by flooding in the districts of Charadeo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, and Udalguri. Charadeo is the worst-hit area, with approximately 24,000 individuals affected, followed by Dhemaji with 22,000 and Dibrugarh with 4,000.

As of Saturday, around 24,000 people were reported affected in four districts.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

In a social media post, Sarma stated that the government has urged the army and air force to remain on standby to assist the state administration. He noted that the flood conditions in Sivasagar, Charadeo, and Jorhat are continuously worsening, prompting the Assam government to seek help from the Indian Army and Air Force for evacuations and rescue operations as needed. The Chief Minister also instructed ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Borah, Keshav Mahanta, and Sushant Borgohain to visit the flood-affected areas immediately to oversee relief efforts and ensure timely assistance to every impacted family.

Sarma emphasized that the safety and welfare of the people are the government's top priorities. He assured that he is monitoring the situation around the clock and that all necessary measures will be taken to save lives and provide assistance.

Current Relief Operations

ASDMA reported that the administration is operating 14 relief camps and distribution centers across four districts, currently housing 440 displaced individuals. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force have rescued ten people from various locations in Charadeo. In the last 24 hours, officials have distributed 58.17 quintals of rice, 10.89 quintals of lentils, 3.26 quintals of salt, and 326.88 liters of mustard oil to those affected. According to ASDMA, 298 villages remain submerged, and 3,874.84 hectares of agricultural land have suffered damage.
