Flipkart to Launch Food Delivery Service, Intensifying Competition in India

Flipkart is preparing to enter the food delivery market, aiming to compete with established services like Swiggy and Zomato. The new service will initially be available in select locations, with plans for expansion based on user feedback. This move comes as Flipkart's quick commerce service, Flipkart Minutes, gains traction, boasting a significant increase in demand from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. As competition heats up, with new entrants like Rapido and Swiggy's budget service Toing, the food delivery landscape in India is poised for significant changes. Stay tuned for more updates on Flipkart's offerings and their impact on the market.

Introduction to Flipkart's New Venture

In recent times, many individuals have turned to food delivery applications like Swiggy and Zomato for their daily meals. These platforms have simplified the process of ordering food, allowing users to receive meals at home within minutes. To avoid monotonous home-cooked meals, people often opt for online orders. Notably, the demand for these apps remains high. Soon, the Indian online food delivery market will witness a new competitor entering the fray.

Flipkart's Food Delivery Service Announcement

E-commerce giant Flipkart has confirmed that it will be launching its food delivery service in the coming weeks. Initially, this service will be available to a limited number of users in select locations. The company plans to enhance the service based on feedback from early customers before expanding it to additional cities.

Impact on Existing Competitors

The entry of Flipkart into the food delivery sector could pose a significant challenge to established players like Swiggy, Zomato, and the newly emerging service from Rapido. This new competition is expected to strengthen the market dynamics.

Details on the New App

According to Kalyan Krishnamurthy, CEO of Flipkart Group, the food delivery service will be launched shortly, although the name of the platform has not yet been disclosed. Customers will be able to access this service through a dedicated mobile application, which will also be integrated into the main Flipkart app to enhance user experience.

Potential Collaboration with ONDC

Reports suggest that Flipkart is considering linking its food delivery service with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This integration could facilitate easier access to a wide range of restaurants and delivery partners. However, Flipkart has not yet provided detailed official information regarding the ONDC integration.

Confidence from Flipkart Minutes

Flipkart's foray into food delivery comes at a time when its quick commerce service, Flipkart Minutes, is experiencing rapid growth. The company has established a network of over 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers across 130 cities in less than two years. Furthermore, demand from tier-2 and tier-3 cities has surged, showing a 42-fold increase compared to the previous year. Notably, over 40% of Flipkart Minutes customers belong to the Gen Z demographic, who prefer fast delivery services.

Increasing Competition in Food Delivery

In the coming months, the food delivery app market is expected to become increasingly competitive. Recently, Rapido launched its food delivery service named Ownly, which promises zero commission from restaurants and prices comparable to offline stores. Additionally, Swiggy has introduced a new service called Toing, aimed at budget-conscious customers. However, Flipkart has yet to clarify its business model or offerings to compete with Swiggy and Zomato. Nevertheless, its entry is likely to heighten competition within the food delivery industry.
