Significant Flight Cancellations Amid Regional Conflict

On Monday, flight services to and from West Asia faced major disruptions, with approximately 100 flights canceled in Delhi, 30 in Chennai, 50 in Bengaluru, 45 in Kochi, and 20 in Thiruvananthapuram.

This situation arose following Iran's retaliatory actions in response to a joint military operation conducted by Israel and the United States targeting Tehran.

On the previous day, Indian airlines had already canceled around 350 flights, in addition to halting all flights to 11 countries in West Asia.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent safety advisory, instructing airlines to avoid airspace over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that the DGCA is working closely with airlines to ensure adherence to safety and operational protocols, advising travelers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

Numerous international airlines have also suspended operations in certain areas or are rerouting flights to avoid West Asian airspace.

The closures have had a global impact on flight operations, particularly affecting major transit hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, resulting in thousands of passengers being stranded in West Asia and parts of Europe.

Indian airlines had already been steering clear of Iranian airspace in recent weeks, but the broader West Asian corridor is crucial for their operations in the region and for flights to Europe and North America.

On Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that foreign nationals in India who need to adjust their travel plans due to the West Asia situation and require visa extensions or need to regularize their stay should reach out to their Foreigners Regional Registration Office.

On Saturday, Israel and the US initiated a joint operation aimed at undermining the capabilities of the Iranian government. In retaliation, Iran asserted that the US-Israeli operation commenced while nuclear negotiations were ongoing.

This escalation occurred amid rising tensions regarding Tehran's nuclear program, with Washington acting as a guarantor of Israel's security. Israel has claimed that Iran is nearing the capability to obtain a nuclear weapon, which could significantly alter the regional security landscape.

Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear ambitions are solely for civilian purposes.

However, with fears of a potential attack and a significant US military presence off its coast in recent months, Tehran has been compelled to reopen discussions with Washington regarding its nuclear program.

On Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed in a joint US-Israeli military operation, escalating an already tense situation in the region.

In response to Khamenei's death, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah announced it had launched rockets and drones at Israel, prompting a strong retaliatory strike from Israel in Lebanon.
