On August 3, a woman lost her life due to sudden flooding in the Kashmir Valley following multiple incidents of cloudbursts. Authorities reported that 52-year-old Nasima Begum was swept away while attempting to cross a bridge over a swollen stream in the Lolab area of Kupwara district.

Recovery Efforts and Damage Reports

Her body was later recovered from the lower part of the stream near Shahabad. Officials noted that a mosque and a pedestrian bridge were also damaged due to the unexpected floods in the Bimla Wali Muri area of Kupwara. Additionally, cloudbursts were reported in tourist spots such as Pahalgam in Anantnag district, Hirpora in Shopian, and Dardpora in Bandipora, causing damage to several roads and bridges.

Evacuations and Traffic Disruptions

Due to rapidly rising water levels in local streams, hundreds of individuals, including tourists, were evacuated to safer locations in Shopian and Pahalgam. Reports indicated that around 80 people were rescued in Shopian, while approximately 200 were moved to safety in Pahalgam. Heavy rainfall in various regions, including the border district of Rajouri, led to the suspension of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Warnings and Precautions Issued

The Rajouri administration has issued advisories urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant. A traffic police officer stated that continuous rainfall had rendered a section of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in the Samroli area of Udhampur highly muddy and slippery, resulting in the suspension of vehicle movement from both directions around 5 PM. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has dispatched personnel and machinery to the affected site to restore traffic as soon as possible.

The closure of this vital highway, which connects Kashmir to the rest of the country, has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides. Traffic police have advised travelers to avoid using NH-44 until it is declared safe. In the Shahpur village of Kotranaka in Rajouri, heavy rainfall caused a landslide that severely damaged a temporary house, although the occupants were unharmed.

Continued Monitoring and Safety Measures

Since Monday afternoon, heavy rainfall has been persistent in most parts of Rajouri. In light of this, the district administration has issued advisories for residents in flood-prone areas, warning of sudden increases in river and stream water levels. Sensitive areas identified by the administration include regions around the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) office, Naban Mohalla (houses near the river), Tarik Bridge area, and lower parts of Naushera town, among others.

Community Preparedness and Emergency Response

Residents in these areas have been urged to proactively move vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with disabilities, to safer locations without waiting for water levels to rise. The advisory also emphasizes the need to be prepared for potential evacuations on short notice and to cooperate with police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil defense, revenue department, and other emergency relief teams. People are warned to stay away from rivers, streams, bridges, and potential flood routes.

The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and has urged the public to avoid panic, refrain from spreading rumors, and adhere strictly to official advisories. Reports indicate that heavy rainfall has also occurred in the districts of Ramban, Reasi, and Poonch, although no immediate damage or flood threats have been reported there. The weather department has forecasted heavy rain and occasional intense rainfall in some districts of the Jammu region until Tuesday.
