Bhaderwah Blanketed in Snow

The picturesque tourist destination of Bhaderwah in the Jammu region has been transformed by the season's first significant snowfall, covering the entire valley in a shimmering white blanket. Snow is visible everywhere, from the mountain peaks to residential areas. Following the recent snowfall, areas such as Jai Valley, Padri Pass, and Gul danda have accumulated between one to two feet of snow. Even Bhaderwah town experienced light snowfall, creating a scene reminiscent of a movie set.

Enhanced Security Measures for Tourists

In light of the heavy influx of tourists to the scenic spots in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir over the past fortnight, security arrangements have been tightened. Officials reported on Saturday that security personnel have been deployed at popular high-altitude meadows, including Chattergalla (11,000 feet), Panj Nala (10,200 feet), and Gul danda (9,555 feet), along the Bhaderwah-Pathankot highway. This deployment aims to boost tourists' confidence and ensure their safety through vigilant monitoring.

Safety and Hospitality Amidst Adverse Weather

Despite the challenging weather conditions, the strong presence of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group (SOG) and paramilitary forces, along with local hospitality, has alleviated initial concerns. Tourists can now enjoy the stunning landscapes and partake in activities like playing in the snow. Superintendent of Police Vinod Sharma stated, 'Bhaderwah is one of the most beautiful locations and attracts a large number of tourists.' However, heavy snowfall in the surrounding mountains poses serious safety challenges, as tourists risk venturing into snow-covered meadows and passes, particularly along the Bhaderwah-Pathankot highway and the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road.

Tourist Experiences and Future Developments

Sharma emphasized that despite the recent snowfall and severe weather, security forces are providing a protective shield for tourists at high-altitude destinations, ensuring they feel completely safe. Tourists have also praised the 24-hour security arrangements and the hospitality offered by local vendors. Vishal Sharma, a tourist from Maharashtra, shared, 'We had some concerns about safety before coming here, but reaching Gul danda and exploring Chattergalla Pass eased all our worries. The police presence in these snow-covered passes is excellent, allowing us to fully enjoy our experience. The warm hospitality from the locals made our trip truly memorable, and we definitely want to return to Bhaderwah.' According to Yasir Wani, president of the Gul danda vendors' association, over 19,000 tourists have visited the area in the past 15 days following the first snowfall.

Upcoming Winter Festival in Bhaderwah

Meanwhile, residents of Bhaderwah and stakeholders in the tourism sector have welcomed the central government's announced plan to construct a ropeway from Mathola village to the 12,500-foot-high Siyozi Dhar, located at the base of the massive Kailash Kund glacier. Union Minister Jitendra Singh posted on social media platform 'X' with updates regarding the ropeway from Mathola to Siyozi Dhar. He mentioned that after daily updates with relevant authorities, the National Highway Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has invited bids for the Detailed Project Report (DPR), with the tender expected to be released by the end of January. This will allow for a study to be completed within the next four months, followed by the commencement of work. Additionally, a two-day winter festival is set to take place in Bhaderwah on January 17 and 19 at Gul danda and the New Bus Stand, with preparations underway.
