Kolkata, June 10: A significant fire incident occurred at a government facility located in the Alipore region of south Kolkata on Wednesday morning, as reported by officials.
Witnesses indicated that around 10 a.m., thick black smoke began to billow from the multi-storey building of the South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad, prompting a call to the Fire Department.
The area was engulfed in smoke, and part of the roof had collapsed due to the blaze.
At least ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene to combat the flames. Firefighters managed to rescue two individuals, while another person descended the building using a rope. Authorities mentioned that additional individuals might still be trapped inside, and they encountered challenges in deploying ladders due to the confined space and surrounding trees.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries at this time.
The fire is suspected to have originated from a short circuit in an air conditioning unit on the fourth floor, rapidly spreading to the fifth and sixth floors and other areas of the building. The smoke was dense, and part of the roof had collapsed.
This multi-storey structure accommodates various government offices, including the office of Jahangir Khan, a Trinamool Congress leader who was recently arrested in Diamond Harbour. The electricity supply to the building has been disconnected.
Government employees arrived by 10:30 a.m. but were barred from entering the premises due to ongoing firefighting efforts.
In addition to the Zilla Parishad office, several other government buildings are situated nearby, raising concerns about the potential spread of the fire. Firefighters are actively working to prevent the flames from reaching adjacent structures.
