Financial Aid Announced for Families Affected by ONGC Gas Leak in Sivasagar
Immediate Relief for Displaced Families
Dibrugarh, June 17: On Tuesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a financial assistance of Rs 25,000 from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for families impacted by the ongoing gas leak at ONGC's well in Bhatiapar village, Sivasagar.
The gas leak, which started on June 12, has led to the displacement of approximately 350 families, who are currently residing in temporary relief camps due to the hazardous conditions caused by the ongoing high-pressure gas release.
Sarma emphasized that the immediate goal is to halt the gas leak, followed by ensuring adequate compensation discussions with ONGC and the Ministry of Petroleum. He noted that many homes have become unlivable and personal belongings have been damaged due to the extreme heat and dangers surrounding the area.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the Chief Secretary of the state has already been in contact with the Chairman of ONGC, who is anticipated to visit the site shortly.
Furthermore, efforts are underway to engage a well control expert from the United States to assist in managing the situation, which is complicated by the extremely high pressure of the well. The Chief Secretary has also reached out to the Union Petroleum Secretary, who has promised all necessary assistance.
During his visit to the affected area in Bhatiapar on Monday, the Chief Minister interacted with families in the camps and assured them of ongoing support.
He clarified that the financial aid provided is not a form of compensation but rather a relief measure to help those displaced acquire essential items such as clothing, school supplies, and daily necessities.
Meanwhile, the Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri conducted a review meeting in Delhi and is actively monitoring the situation, with Sarma set to participate in further discussions via video conference.
In a detailed update shared on a microblogging platform, Puri reported that well control operations are underway, with ONGC deploying skilled personnel from various locations and utilizing advanced equipment like high-capacity fire pumps, frack pumps, and mud to manage the gas flow.
The Minister highlighted that 'junk pumping', a sophisticated technique for sealing wells, is being implemented, and ONGC officials are in regular communication with international specialists. He also mentioned that a water blanket is being maintained continuously to provide a cooling effect and prevent fires.
Puri confirmed that residents were evacuated promptly on the first day and are receiving all necessary relief and support.
