Trial Progresses in the Dokmoka Lynching Case

Raha, Feb 5: The trial concerning the lynching incident in Dokmoka, which horrified Assam in 2018 with the tragic deaths of two young men, is approaching its concluding stages. The prosecution is currently articulating its arguments in front of the Nagaon district and Session court.

Senior advocate Ziaul Kamar, representing the prosecution, has presented comprehensive arguments to the court, emphasizing the heinous nature of the crime and the evidence that connects the accused to the murders of Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath.

“We are in the process of presenting our case, detailing how the accused executed the crime and the weapons involved. We aim to finalize our arguments by February 7, after which the defense will have the opportunity to present their side,” stated the prosecution counsel.

To date, the Nagaon court has documented testimonies from 71 witnesses and 48 accused individuals, including three minors, making this one of the most scrutinized criminal trials in the state in recent times.

In response to the ongoing proceedings, Gopal Chandra Das, the father of Nilotpal, expressed his family's continued trust in the judicial system. “We believe in the court's process. We are hopeful for justice, as the people of the state wish for,” he remarked.

Ajit Nath, Abhijit’s father, shared similar sentiments while reflecting on the profound loss his family has endured. “We trust the court. We await the verdict, hoping for justice. My only son was taken from me. I am looking forward to the court's ruling,” he stated.

The incident dates back to June 8, 2018, when the serene hills of Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district became the backdrop for a tragic event. Nilotpal and Abhijit, who had visited the area to admire the picturesque Kangthilangso waterfalls, were wrongly identified as child abductors and brutally lynched by a mob of approximately 50 individuals.

Nearly eight years after this incident, which sparked widespread outrage and reignited discussions about mob violence and the spread of misinformation, the trial is now nearing its end.
