FIFA President and French President Stand Against Racism Following Controversial Remarks on Mbappe

FIFA President's Strong Stance

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, has vehemently denounced the racist comments aimed at Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national football team, made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. Infantino emphasized football's role in promoting unity and reiterated the sport's commitment to inclusivity. In a message shared on his Instagram Story, he stated, "Football has shown during this FIFA World Cup how it is such a powerful unifier in society. Our sport must remain an inclusive and safe space for all, and our efforts continue to eliminate racism from our beautiful game and society."


Support from French President

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his support for Mbappe, commending him for addressing the senator's controversial remarks. Macron stated, "Another goal for Kylian Mbappe. Against racism this time. All my support. When words defile, our values respond: dignity, respect, fraternity."


Details of the Controversial Remarks

The senator's comments included derogatory terms, referring to Mbappe as a "colonised Cameroonian" and making disparaging remarks about his performance and character. In response, Mbappe labeled Amarilla as a "despicable woman" unworthy of her position.


Paraguayan Government's Response

In light of the senator's remarks, the Paraguayan government issued a statement distancing itself from Amarilla's comments. They expressed disapproval, stating, "The Government of the Republic of Paraguay deplores and rejects the statements made by Senator Celeste Amarilla, directed at the captain of the French national football team. These statements contradict the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity, which our country promotes."
