FIFA Best Awards Spark Controversy Over Player Selections
FIFA Best Awards Highlights
The FIFA Best awards ceremony held in Qatar recognized Ousmane Dembele and Aitana Bonmati as the top male and female players, respectively. However, the announcement quickly led to a backlash on social media, with fans questioning the legitimacy of the award choices. Many pointed out the notable absence of stars like Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, and Raphinha from the nominations.
Dembele, who had an outstanding season with Paris Saint-Germain, won the men's award after netting 35 goals and playing a crucial role in securing the club's first Champions League title. Bonmati, on the other hand, received the women's award for the third consecutive year, further adding to her accolades, including the Ballon d'Or. Despite the recognition, discussions online shifted focus to the players who were overlooked.
Supporters argued that Kane's impressive scoring, Mbappe's consistent performances at both club and international levels, and Raphinha's contributions at Barcelona warranted acknowledgment. Critics claimed that FIFA's voting system, which included input from fans, media, captains, and coaches, failed to recognize more deserving performances.
The criticism extended beyond player awards. PSG's coach Luis Enrique was named the best men's coach, while Sarina Wiegman from England received the women's coaching award. Goalkeeping honors went to Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hannah Hampton, while Santiago Montiel's spectacular overhead kick earned the Puskas award. Lizbeth Ovalle's scorpion kick was awarded the Marta award.
FIFA just loves that UCL narrative. Win one trophy with your oil-funded galacticos and suddenly you're better than those that didn't win it but had a better season lol
Raphinha got robbed
Obviously glad our guy won another award, but it is funny how the FIFA Best Awards are just the Ballon D'Or ceremony all over again with nearly the same results, just organized by a different entity
It’s the biggest lack of respect of the year, he should be in the XI
Raphinha, Salah, Mbappe all looking at 'FIFPRO Players with Best PR'
What is Bellingham doing there with 0 trophies ahead of Raphinha? Even João Neves who won a treble and Nations League deserves to be there first instead of someone who lost to his biggest rivals 4 times in one season.
Bellingham & Palmer ahead of Raphinha and Salah? Come on, this is nothing short of utter nonsense
Disgrace from Barcelona for pumping Lamine instead of Raphinha
