Hierro's Insights on Spain's National Team

Fernando Hierro, a former defender for Spain, expressed his admiration for the current national team's 'character' and unity, which he believes enhances their chances in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. He highlighted the freedom with which emerging stars like Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Pedri play. Hierro, who represented Spain in four World Cups from 1990 to 2002, noted that his generation struggled to leave a mark in the tournament. He discussed the current squad under coach Luis de la Fuente, emphasizing the potential of young players as they aim to end a 16-year wait for another World Cup title, having last won in 2010. Following a disappointing draw against Cape Verde, Spain is set to face Saudi Arabia in Atlanta on Sunday.

Team Character and Adaptability

Hierro commented on the team's strong candidacy for the tournament, stating, "I appreciate their character. They approach every match consistently, regardless of the opponent. Whether it's a EURO semi-final or final, they maintain their style. They are a well-rounded team, adept at managing possession, adjusting tempo, and exploiting space. Their flexibility allows them to change formations and strategies during matches, which boosts their confidence."

A Cohesive Unit

He described the current squad as 'very tight-knit' with a positive atmosphere, attributing this to coach de la Fuente's familiarity with many players from their youth days. "They appear to have a strong bond. The environment within the camp seems excellent. De la Fuente understands what motivates them, having worked with most at the youth level. Despite their youth, they exhibit confidence and cohesion, which is promising for their World Cup journey," he remarked.

Reflections on Past Generations

Reflecting on his own generation's challenges, Hierro noted, "We believed our time would eventually come. We reached the quarter-finals multiple times and were close to achieving something remarkable, but we fell short. We delivered strong performances but often lost in penalties or missed clear opportunities. We felt that breaking through to a semi-final would change the tournament's dynamics. Our expectations were high due to our consistent form, but we couldn't convert that into success when it mattered most."

Keys to World Cup Success

Hierro emphasized that winning a FIFA World Cup requires more than just talent. He stated, "Staying calm and fostering team spirit is vital during a tournament. With a squad of 26 players, it's challenging to satisfy everyone throughout a long tournament. Team spirit is essential. The starting lineup may not always finish the tournament, so all players must be prepared to contribute. Being decisive in crucial moments, especially in tight matches, is crucial. This team appears mature, but they will face tough challenges against the world's best teams. The key is to remain composed and stick to their playing style."

Praise for Emerging Stars

Regarding young talents like Lamine, Nico, and Pedri, Hierro remarked, "If you weren't aware of their ages, you wouldn't believe how young they are. They play with a desire to succeed while also enjoying the game, showcasing tremendous character. Their understanding of the game and ability to express themselves on the pitch is impressive. They play freely but take responsibility. All three possess remarkable character; Nico and Lamine are fearless in one-on-one situations, while Pedri has an innate sense of timing—knowing when to slow down or speed up the game. Their maturity is exceptional for their age, playing with a confidence typically seen in more seasoned players."
