Tragic Incident Unfolds

Guwahati, Feb 3: A tragic road accident occurred near the Gauhati High Court, resulting in the death of a young woman. One of the individuals in the car turned himself in to the authorities on Tuesday, following the incident that took place the previous night.

The individual, identified as Omar Syed, is related to the driver, Kayam Syed, who was apprehended by police on Monday night.

Omar Syed presented himself at the Panbazar police station on Tuesday morning.

Two other passengers, named Parveen Soni and Akshay, reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident and are currently untraceable, according to police reports.

The collision happened late Monday night near the traffic point of the Gauhati High Court, right in front of the Chief Justice's official residence, when a hatchback lost control and crashed into a road divider.

At the time of the accident, five individuals were inside the vehicle. Niha Das was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact.

According to police sources, the vehicle, an Alto, was owned by a cab driver and had been borrowed by Kayam Syed for a personal outing. The group was reportedly out for a night drive.

Traffic police indicated that the car was traveling from the Panbazar direction when it collided with the divider near the High Court.

“The vehicle crashed into the right side divider. It was a four-wheeler, and no other vehicles were involved. The traffic signal was red, and near the Chief Justice’s traffic point, the vehicle lost control and hit the divider,” stated a traffic police official.

The official also noted that Niha was seated in the rear left seat during the incident.

“One individual was found near the vehicle and taken to the police station, while the others are believed to have escaped. Preliminary investigations suggest that the detained individual claimed the accident occurred while attempting to avoid a scooter,” the official added.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly confronted the driver after the crash.

Personnel from the Panbazar Traffic Police arrived shortly after, recovered the deceased's body, seized the damaged vehicle, and detained Kayam Syed.

Niha Das, a third-year undergraduate student at Radha Govinda Barua College, had left her home in Fatashil GS Colony earlier that evening to tutor children.

She later informed her mother via phone that she would be dining out with a friend.

Her family mentioned that Niha often returned home late due to her tutoring schedule, which initially did not raise any alarms.

“She used to go for tuitions. When her mother called her, she said she would return after eating something. She went out on her scooty, but the accident happened inside a car. She usually came home by 10 or 10:30 at night, so we did not worry at first,” her father recounted.

Authorities stated that further investigations are ongoing to locate the absconding passengers and clarify the events leading up to the accident.
