Fast-Track Court Established for Zubeen Garg Death Case in Assam

The Gauhati High Court has established a fast-track court to expedite the trial proceedings in the Zubeen Garg death case. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Judge Sharmila Bhuyan will preside over the court, which aims to ensure timely justice following a request from Garg's family. The decision reflects the government's commitment to addressing the case efficiently, especially after the Special Investigation Team filed charges against several accused. Garg's mysterious death in Singapore last year has raised significant public interest, making this development crucial for the pursuit of justice.

Gauhati High Court Takes Action

Guwahati, Mar 19: The Gauhati High Court has set up a dedicated fast-track sessions court to expedite the trial proceedings in the Zubeen Garg death case, as announced by Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Judge Sharmila Bhuyan from Baksa district will oversee this fast-track court. In a social media update, Sarma expressed that this decision marks a crucial step towards achieving justice in the Zubeen Garg murder case.

According to Sarma, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court has appointed Smt. Sharmila Bhuyan to lead the exclusive court for daily trial sessions in this case.

The establishment of this fast-track court was previously approved by the Cabinet in February.

Initially, the government considered continuing the trial with the current judge, especially since no accused had been granted bail yet. However, following a request from Garg's family for a quicker trial, the government decided to proceed with this new arrangement.

“While we believed that maintaining the case with the existing court would ensure continuity, the family's request for a fast-track process led us to this decision in the interest of justice,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the formation of the fast-track court will significantly accelerate the judicial process and reflects the government's dedication to providing timely justice.

He also expressed gratitude to Justice Ashutosh Kumar, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, for his support in advancing the cause of justice.

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away under unclear circumstances on September 19 of the previous year in Singapore, where he was scheduled to perform at a cultural event.

The Assam Police's Special Investigation Team submitted a chargesheet on December 12, identifying seven individuals who were arrested, with four facing murder charges.
