Family Alleges Police Threatened Arrested Man Before His Death
Allegations of Police Misconduct in Custody Death
The family of a man who died while in police custody has claimed that four officers threatened him with death in a staged encounter if he did not pay a bribe of four lakh rupees.
In response, the Gurugram police stated that the individual allegedly committed suicide in the custody of the crime unit in Farrukh Nagar. The police department has since transferred the four officers involved to the police lines and registered a murder case to investigate the allegations.
Asif Iqbal, a 22-year-old resident of Rampur village in Rajasthan's Bhiwadi district, was arrested on Friday in the Farrukh Nagar area. According to police reports, he had been accused of theft multiple times since 2022, with charges including one in Delhi, three in Faridabad, and four in Gurugram.
Iqbal had already been sentenced in four of these cases. Following his arrest, he was held in custody by the Farrukh Nagar crime branch. Police reported that around 3:45 PM on Friday, he allegedly hanged himself using a makeshift noose made from a torn quilt cover.
This quilt was provided to him for winter use. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead by doctors. The police informed that the case has been referred for a magistrate's inquiry, and necessary legal actions have been initiated. A post-mortem examination revealed minor injuries, and samples have been sent for further analysis.
On Sunday, Iqbal's family accused the four police officers who arrested him of demanding a bribe of four lakh rupees, later reducing their demand to two lakh rupees due to their financial constraints. They also warned that if the money was not paid, Iqbal would be killed in a fake encounter. The police have stated that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
