Imphal, May 2: After nearly a month of discussions with state officials, families were able to claim the remains of two infants who tragically lost their lives in a suspected mortar explosion in Bishnupur on April 7.
In the morning, family members, along with relatives, gathered at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) mortuary in Imphal to take custody of the remains. The final rites are anticipated to occur later today, according to sources.
Emotional scenes unfolded at the mortuary as grieving relatives expressed their sorrow while receiving the bodies, with women providing comfort to one another amidst the visible anguish.

The remains had been unclaimed for weeks as families and Joint Action Committees (JACs) engaged in extensive discussions with the state government, demanding justice, accountability for those responsible, and enhanced security measures.
After 25 days of negotiations and repeated appeals from authorities, the families decided to accept the remains.
The incident on April 7 not only resulted in the deaths of the two infants but also left their mother injured, sparking widespread outrage throughout the state.
Following the incident, tensions escalated, leading to the deaths of three protesters near a CRPF camp when security forces opened fire to disperse a restless crowd, further complicating the already volatile situation.
The violence resulted in a significant decline in law and order, prompting curfews in various areas, alongside protests, road blockades, and the suspension of internet services in parts of the state.
Due to the seriousness of the case, the investigation has been assigned to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
State Home Minister K Govindas reported that five individuals have been arrested so far, while extensive combing operations are ongoing in relation to the case.
Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has repeatedly urged families and JACs to accept the bodies and assist in restoring normalcy.
This incident has ignited ongoing protests and heightened feelings of fear and vulnerability among residents, highlighting the fragile law and order situation in the state.
