Vaccination Campaign Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia in Himachal Pradesh

Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh), August 3 - A significant vaccination initiative is underway in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh to address a deadly disease affecting cows and buffaloes. Officials reported on Monday that this illness can claim the lives of infected animals within eight hours. So far, approximately 12,000 animals have been vaccinated against Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS).

The Animal Husbandry Department is spearheading this campaign to safeguard livestock from HS, commonly referred to as 'Galghotu.' This bacterial disease poses a serious threat to cattle, particularly cows and buffaloes.

A spokesperson from the department indicated that the disease is characterized by high fever and severe throat swelling in animals, often leading to death within eight to 24 hours. Dr. Sujay Sharma, the Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department in Hamirpur, emphasized the importance of timely vaccinations for farmers' cows and buffaloes. He stated, “Vaccination administered on time plays a crucial role in protecting animals from fatal diseases like Hemorrhagic Septicemia.” The vaccination is being conducted free of charge in both urban and rural areas of the district in a phased manner.

The department has received around 60,000 doses for this campaign, which will continue throughout August. Officials noted that HS spreads rapidly during the monsoon season, and without timely treatment or vaccination, livestock could face mortality. Therefore, vaccination is regarded as the most effective preventive measure against this disease.
