Incident Overview

Mumbai/Latur | A significant explosion occurred at a courier office in Latur, Maharashtra, on Saturday morning while unloading parcels. Initial investigations have revealed crucial information regarding the incident. Two individuals sustained injuries, with one reported to be in critical condition. Preliminary police inquiries suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas cylinder used for an air pistol contained within a parcel. However, the exact cause of the blast has yet to be officially confirmed, as authorities await forensic reports.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, around 10 AM, a tempo carrying a courier from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar arrived at the Umate Couriers office in Latur. Employees were in the process of unloading parcels when a sudden loud explosion occurred from one of the packages. The blast was so powerful that it caused panic among those present, leading to a state of fear in the vicinity. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced and is circulating on social media.

Parcel Left Unattended

Initial findings indicate that the air pistol was sent via courier from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Reports suggest that the parcel had been left on the footpath outside the courier office for two days. Police suspect that prolonged exposure to heat may have caused the CO₂ cylinder inside the parcel to explode. However, this remains a hypothesis pending further investigation. The actual cause of the cylinder's explosion, its condition, and the nature of the contents will be clarified once forensic analysis is completed.

Injuries Reported

District Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe stated that the explosion occurred while the courier items were being unloaded from the tempo. One employee, who was inside the vehicle at the time, suffered severe injuries and has been admitted to the civil hospital in Latur. Another individual standing near the vehicle also sustained minor injuries from the blast.

Investigation Underway

Upon receiving news of the incident, senior police officials arrived at the scene, along with forensic teams, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and other investigative agencies. The teams collected necessary evidence from the site, including burnt items and other suspicious materials scattered around. All evidence is undergoing scientific examination to determine the cause of the explosion.

Public Advisory

Superintendent Tambe has urged citizens to refrain from spreading rumors regarding the incident and to avoid sharing unverified information. He reassured the public that there is no need for panic, as the police are thoroughly investigating the matter and considering all potential aspects related to the explosion.

Ongoing Investigations

Currently, the investigation has not confirmed any conspiracy or intentional attack. However, investigative agencies are not dismissing any possibilities. They are examining the contents of the parcel, the condition of the CO₂ cylinder, and the technical reasons behind the explosion. The primary question remains regarding the circumstances that led to the gas cylinder's explosion and why the parcel was left unattended for two days outside the office. Authorities are actively seeking answers to these questions, and clarity on the incident will emerge once the forensic report is available.
