Celebrating Dussehra and the Ramayana
Currently, the markets across India are buzzing with excitement for Navratri and Dussehra. This year, Dussehra will be celebrated with great fervor on October 19, marking the day Lord Rama defeated Ravana, a victory commemorated as Vijayadashami.
Globally, there are various beliefs surrounding the Ramayana and the character of Ravana. One intriguing aspect that many are eager to learn about is the historical sites in Sri Lanka, located at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, which are linked to the Ramayana.
Researchers have claimed to discover 50 locations in Sri Lanka that are directly associated with the Ramayana. Among these findings is a cave believed to house the remains of Ravana, situated deep within the forests of Ragala.
Many of us have witnessed Ram Leela, where after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama entrusted Ravana's body to his brother Vibhishana. However, it remains a mystery whether Vibhishana performed the last rites for Ravana.
According to local beliefs, there exists a cave in Sri Lanka where Ravana is said to have meditated, and it is believed that his body is still preserved there. This cave is located at an elevation of 8,000 feet in the Ragala region.
Additionally, it is said that near the spot where Ravana abducted Sita, there is a waterfall, and the rocks in the area still bear the footprints of Lord Hanuman.
