Introduction to Puducherry

Puducherry, a Union Territory of India, was once a French colony and comprises four districts. The name 'Puducherry' is derived from its largest district, previously known as 'Pondicherry' until it was officially renamed in September 2006. In Tamil, it translates to 'new village.' Geographically, it is located to the east of the Bay of Bengal, bordered by Tamil Nadu on three sides. The region was under French rule for 138 years before merging with India on November 1, 1954.

Historical Background

Historically, the areas of Puducherry were part of a French colony, similar to how the rest of India was under British rule. The French East India Company established its first factory in Surat, Gujarat, and the second in Puducherry in 1674. Subsequently, French companies were set up in Mahe in 1725, Yanam in 1731, and Karaikal in 1739.

Languages Spoken

The official languages in Puducherry include Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and French, varying by district. The influence of French culture is evident in the architecture, lifestyle, and cuisine, despite being surrounded by Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, where Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu cultures are predominant.
