Understanding Sonagachi: A Hub of Prostitution

In India, numerous young women are drawn into the sex trade daily. Some enter this world due to dire circumstances or financial needs, while others are forced into it against their will. Today, we delve into Sonagachi, Asia's largest red-light district located in Kolkata. Research indicates that approximately 11,000 sex workers operate in multi-story buildings within this area each year. Situated on Chittaranjan Avenue in Kolkata's Shyambazar, this neighborhood is often referred to as infamous lanes. The living conditions for women here are extremely dire.

Sonagachi is a slum area where many residents live below the poverty line. Consequently, if a girl is born into such a family, her fate is often sealed before she even takes her first breath, with expectations set for her to enter the sex trade. In Sonagachi, underage girls are pressured to engage with clients much older than themselves. Alarmingly, many girls sell their bodies for as little as 120 rupees daily.

Sonagachi: A Place with Thousands of Girls

According to reports, over 12,000 girls have become part of the sex trade in these notorious lanes of Kolkata. A woman can earn between 100 to 150 rupees for a single encounter with a client. For such meager amounts, innocent girls are often forced to stand before multiple clients throughout the day. In this era of rising costs, sustaining oneself on such little income seems impossible, yet the desperation of the local population compels many families to auction off their daughters.

Numerous images of Sonagachi available online vividly portray the plight and desperation of its residents.

Sonagachi: Inclusion of Underage Girls

Reports suggest that every year, around 1,000 new girls are drawn into Sonagachi, many of whom find it impossible to escape this grim reality. In English, the brothels are often referred to as 'one-way doors'—easy to enter but nearly impossible to exit. The poverty is so severe that the number of underage sex workers often surpasses that of adult women. Any girl who resists is met with extreme brutality and is forced back into the trade.

The Harsh Reality of Sonagachi

Sonagachi is a slum area where the narrow lanes reflect the struggles and poverty of its inhabitants. To improve their family's financial situation, daughters in this community are coerced into having physical relations with 15 to 20 clients daily, and refusal often leads to violence.
