Kolkata's Sonagachi: A Disturbing Insight

In India, numerous young women are drawn into the sex trade daily. Some enter this grim world due to dire circumstances or financial needs, while others are forced into it against their will. Today, we delve into Sonagachi, Asia's largest red-light district located in Kolkata. Research indicates that approximately 11,000 sex workers operate in multi-story buildings within this area each year. Situated on Chittaranjan Avenue in Kolkata's Shyambazar, Sonagachi is often referred to as a notorious alley. The living conditions for women here are extremely dire.

Sonagachi is a slum area where many residents live below the poverty line. Tragically, if a girl is born into such a family, her fate is often sealed before she even takes her first breath, with expectations set for her to enter the sex trade. In this district, underage girls are coerced into relationships with men often twice their age. Alarmingly, many girls sell their bodies for as little as 120 rupees each day.

Sonagachi: A Hub of Exploitation

According to reports, over 12,000 girls have become part of the sex trade in these infamous streets of Kolkata. A woman can earn between 100 to 150 rupees for a night with a client. For such meager amounts, innocent girls are often paraded before multiple customers daily. In today's economy, surviving on such little money is nearly impossible, yet the desperation of the local populace forces many families to auction off their daughters. Numerous images of Sonagachi available online starkly depict the plight and desperation of its residents.

Sonagachi: The Involvement of Minors

Reports suggest that each year, around 1,000 new girls are drawn into Sonagachi, many of whom find it impossible to escape. In English, the brothels are referred to as a 'one-way door'—easy to enter but nearly impossible to exit. The level of poverty is such that there are often more underage sex workers than adults. If a girl attempts to resist, she faces extreme brutality and is often forced back into the trade.

The Harsh Reality of Sonagachi

Sonagachi is a slum area where the narrow alleys reflect the struggles and poverty of its inhabitants. To improve their family's financial situation, daughters are coerced into having physical relations with 15 to 20 men daily, and refusal often leads to violence.
